Concerns over the safety of tourists travelling through Berau’s waters have resurfaced, prompting local authorities to take action.

The Berau Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) is calling on the local government to mandate the installation of Global Positioning System (GPS) devices on all speedboats used for tourism, particularly those operating around Derawan and Maratua islands — two of the region’s most visited destinations.

Arman Nofriansyah, Deputy Chair of Commission II at DPRD Berau, stressed that GPS installation is a crucial measure for risk mitigation and ensuring passenger safety at sea. He noted that Berau’s maritime area lies adjacent to the Sulawesi Sea, making navigation and emergency preparedness all the more essential.

“Berau is home to several top-tier tourist destinations, with Derawan and Maratua being among the most frequented,” Arman stated.

He emphasised that GPS tracking could prove vital in emergency situations — such as engine failure or if a speedboat becomes lost at sea. Without a reliable tracking system, it’s not inconceivable for vessels to drift into the territorial waters of neighbouring countries like the Philippines or Malaysia.

“We strongly support the use of GPS, especially on twin-engine speedboats, which are often used for tourism activities,” he added.

Arman further highlighted that having a tracking system in place would significantly enhance the accuracy and speed of rescue operations. He reiterated that ensuring the safety of tourists must remain a top priority, as it plays a vital role in maintaining and promoting Berau’s reputation as a safe and attractive travel destination.
